We peek into the airport routines and bizarre quirks of the world's most well-traveled people.

In the second season of The Afterparty, which hits Apple TV+ on July 12, Tiffany Haddish returns to her role as a detective investigating one wacky murder. In real life, before she hit it big as an actor and comedian, her first jobs were actually for airlines, which has informed how she travels to this day—so, yes, she’s judging her planemates’ behavior. “I can’t stand when people are rude to the customer service agents. Before they even give them a chance, there’s not even a hello, just rude off the top!” Haddish says. Her advice for persuading gate staff, then, is pretty simple. “I smile first, ask them how they're doing, and then ask for what it is I want. And I usually get it, because people want to be treated with kindness,” she says.

Haddish, who also appears later this month in the movie The Haunted Mansion, based off the Disney theme park ride, chatted with Condé Nast Traveler about hotel research, partying on Greek islands, her favorite spots in her hometown, and more.

The way she typically spends her flight time:

Sleep. I can sleep easy. I'm usually exhausted when I get on an airplane—if I know it's an early-morning flight or a 6:00 a.m. departure, I will not go to bed. I'll just stay up and leave for the airport at four, so I'm already tired. I sit down, buckle up, and the flight attendant asks, “Would you like anything to drink?” I'll be like, “Yes, I'll have a—” and be knocked out. I wake up thirsty!

Her first trip in first class:

I was hired at American Airlines and they flew me out, first class, for training. It was my first time on an airplane, ever! I was 18 years old and I was scared as fuck. When the plane took off, I was praying, and then the next thing I knew I was asleep, and we landed. I was like, “Oh, that's it?” I'm like a kid in the car. It's a wrap.

The destination she could travel to a million times and not be sick of it:

Eritrea. Every time I go there I learn something new. There’s always really fun events going on, parties. The people are all kind to me. The food is super good. Peaches taste like peaches. Tomatoes taste like real tomatoes. Nothing tastes fake or manufactured, because it's not. Everything's real. Do you remember biting into a peach and it was so juicy it ran down your arm? When's the last time that happened for you? In Eritrea, every time you get one, it's running down your arm. The watermelon tastes like childhood. Oh my goodness, I love it there.

The most important aspect of any hotel room for her:

My highest expectation is: How comfy is that bed?. I go on sleepcations. I'm big on sleep! My one dog's name is Sleeper, the other dog's name is Slumber, and my dog that passed away, her name was Dreamer. I'm about rest. Sometimes, if I know that they might not have a hundred-thread count, whatever, I will bring my own sheets. I read the [hotel] reviews, and if there's not enough reviews, maybe it’s a new hotel, I will call and ask an employee. I'm dedicated to getting my rest.

Her favorite solo trip:

I want to go back to Bermuda. I feel like that was the best sleep and the best fun. Even though I was by myself, I really enjoyed it because I didn't have to wait on anybody else, and I did what I wanted to do, which was a lot of nothing. I just went to local restaurants, hung out on the beach and looked at the fishes, snorkeled. I really like Bermuda.

…and the kind of vacations she takes with friends:

I love me some Mykonos. I went with all my homeboys and when I tell you I had the time of my life! I did not get no sleep, but we danced all night. It was so much fun. Oh my god, fun, fun, fun, fun, fun. When I went to Colombia, again with some of my girlfriends and my homeboys, we had a blast.

The places she recommends to visitors of her hometown, Los Angeles:

I’m thinking of all the things I’ve taken my friends to: For a restaurant, I really like Alta Adams. I would suggest that they go to Leimert Park, especially on a Saturday. I would take them to Venice Beach, or Santa Monica Beach. Got to go to Griffith Park, got to. I love going to the fairs, so maybe the L.A. County Fair, and I really like the Culver City Fair too. I always take my friends to the Culver City Fair because then you can see all of L.A.: the Hollywood sign, all the way to the Inland Empire, Long Beach. You can see the whole ocean, everything. It's beautiful!

Where she’s hoping to go next:

I'm planning on going to a lot of places, but I would love to see Fiji or Tonga or Papua New Guinea. And I would love to go to the Hamptons. I’ve never been there before, and always wanted to go.
